"I am a Grantepreneur - a grant professional whose entrepreneurial spirit and skills are improving the grant performance of organizations in my community and advancing grant career and business opportunities for other grant pros."

~ Katherine F.H. Heart, GPC, M.Ed.

After working as a nonprofit program manager for 15 years, I longed for a professional writing career and started freelancing as a technical writer specializing in grants in 2002. I enjoyed this type of writing so much that I formed Heart Resources, LLC in 2005 and "bootstrapped" (used profits to gradually grow) my business into a successful social mission-driven company that has assisted nonprofits to win millions of dollars in grant awards and trained 1,000+ individuals to prepare grants for regional and national organizations. I earned the Grant Professional Certified (GPC) credential in 2013 and was the first grant pro to be designated an Approved Trainer by the Grant Professionals Association in 2014. This interview was recorded by Liberty Ferda (Instructor, University of Pittsburgh) during the pandemic as a guest lecture for students in proposal writing courses.

Grantepreneur is the book that I wish had been available when I was a freelancer. I wrote this book over several years while presenting seminars to help people answer the question: “What’s the best way to successfully start a grant career and business?” It provides many real-life examples from my everyday work as a grant consultant, writer and trainer. The book is written in plain language with engaging information about the World of Grants and every aspect of this growing occupation. The workbook format is laced with thought-provoking personal and professional questions and activities that will help you to explore your interests in nonprofit causes, the meaningfulness that can be found in this work, and whether the financial prospects fit your personal needs for a career and/or business. The Grant Career Action Plan provides activities to take you through 10 Steps to Get Hired. I share "insider" strategies to consider when starting out as a freelancer as I did. Information for further study, recommended grant books, training, and national membership organizations are included.
